Trailer

[Synopsis]

In Manhattan, Tom Cat, who dreams of becoming a pianist, plays in Central Park. While, his longtime rival, Jerry Mouse, is in search of a new home. After Tom’s keyboard is destroyed in a fight, he chases Jerry but bumps into a young woman named Kayla Forester, who loses her job as a result. Down on her luck, Kayla wants to prove her capabilities by looking for a position at New York’s fanciest hotel, the Royal Gate. Kayla presents a stolen resume as her own and is hired to help set up a high-profile wedding. While Kayla gets a tour of the hotel, Jerry takes refuge in the hotel where his regular shenanigans involve stealing food and items to ramp up his new lifestyle, and Tom comes up with various strategies to enter the hotel and pursue Jerry.

Local celebrities Preeta Mehta and her fiancé Ben are greeted as they arrive, along with their pets Spike and Toots, who are all unaware of Jerry stealing from Preeta’s handbag, with the exception of Spike. As the couple is escorted to their room, Jerry’s presence is revealed, which puts the wedding and the hotel at risk. Kayla offers to help catch Jerry, but fails and realizes that he won’t be easy to catch. After many failed attempts, Tom successfully enters the hotel, with him and Jerry ending up fighting and wrecking the whole hotel room. Kayla comes to check due to noise complaints and befriends Tom because of their same goal of catching Jerry, which has Tom hired by owner Mr. Dubros to exterminate Jerry. Tom and Kayla are threatened by their boss Terence to be fired, if Tom fails to catch Jerry.

After many failed attempts, Tom designs a big mouse trap and gets Jerry out of the hotel. Meanwhile, Kayla helps with the wedding plans and learns from Preeta that her engagement ring is missing. Jerry returns and reveals to Kayla that he had Preeta’s ring with him, and he agrees to give it back to her, if she lets him stay in the hotel. Before Kayla can agree, Terence returns from walking Spike, and tries to look into Jerry hiding in Kayla’s coat pocket, but ends up creating a huge scene to which Spike, Tom, and Jerry’s ensuing chase destroys the hotel lobby.

Terence is put on leave, while Kayla takes over as event manager for returning the ring stolen by Jerry. Kayla tells Tom and Jerry that, if they want to stay in the hotel, the pair will have to get along and spend the whole next day far away from the hotel together, to which they agree. While Kayla takes care of the hotel and manages the wedding with the crew, Tom and Jerry bond during their trip, but are taken to a pet compound after they inadvertently disrupt a baseball game. A vengeful Terence separately visits Tom and Jerry and tells lies of what the pair said to each other behind their backs, which angers them and incites them to fight at the wedding, resulting in the wedding and the rest of the hotel getting destroyed.

After Kayla admits her deception and leaves in shame while Preeta renounces the wedding, a remorseful Tom and Jerry reconcile with each other. They convince Kayla and the hotel crew, which includes a reluctant Terence, to salvage the wedding, to make up for the hotel being destroyed by their cat-and-mouse battle. The wedding is held at Central Park, where Kayla apologizes to Preeta about the chaos and promises that Tom and Jerry have changed their ways. Ben also apologizes to Preeta because of the extensive expenses, in light of impressing her dad. Kayla and the woman whose resume she had taken from reconcile with each other and get jobs at the hotel, and Tom also gets one as the hotel’s pianist. Tom plays the piano for Toots, with Jerry joining the party, until a mishap causes them to revert to their old habits.

Year2019

Trailer

[Synopsis]

Deep in the Peruvian jungle, 6-year-old Dora Márquez (Madelyn Miranda), daughter of jungle explorers Cole (Michael Peña) and Elena (Eva Longoria), spends her days going on adventures with her monkey friend Boots, her 7-year-old cousin Diego (Malachi Barton), and imaginary friends Backpack and Map while thwarting Swiper (voiced by Benicio del Toro) the thieving fox. One day, Diego and his family leave to Los Angeles while Dora and her parents remain searching for the hidden Inca city of gold, Parapata.
After 10 years of exploring, Dora’s parents decipher the location of Parapata and choose to send a now 16-year-old Dora (Isabela Moner) to Diego’s high school in Los Angeles while they travel to the lost city. Staying with a now 17-year-old Diego (Jeff Wahlberg) and his family, Dora meets fellow students Sammy (Madeleine Madden) and Randy (Nicholas Coombe). Due to Dora’s intelligence, Sammy sees her as her rival, but Randy is amused by Dora’s intelligence, as well as her being very nice to him, and develops an immediate crush on her. Dora enjoys her new life, but Diego is embarrassed by her eccentric behavior; it culminates in mocking and name-calling by several of their peers when Dora publicly dances to a conga song at the school dance. As Diego walks outside, Dora tries to comfort him, but Diego says that she is not in the jungle anymore, which leads to a fallout between them.

The following day, on a class field trip to a museum, Dora and the others are lured to its off-exhibit archives, where they are captured by mercenaries led by Powell (Temuera Morrison) who fly them to Peru. When they land, a man named Alejandro (Eugenio Derbez), who claims to be a friend of Dora’s parents, helps them escape. In the process, the mercenaries, aided by Swiper, steal Dora’s map. Alejandro reports that Dora’s parents have gone missing and that the mercenaries are searching for them in hopes of getting into Parapata to steal its treasures. Dora resolves to find her parents first with Alejandro’s help, while Diego comes along to look after Dora, with the other teens tagging along in hopes of being rescued.

The group travels through numerous obstacles, including quicksand, Inca ruin puzzles, and attacks from forest guards of Parapata. During the journey, Sammy warms up to Dora and becomes nicer to everyone. Dora and Diego eventually reconcile and Dora notices Diego has a crush on Sammy. After numerous hazards, Dora reaches her parents just outside the borders of Parapata, but Alejandro reveals he was the mercenaries’ leader all along and captures them. The other teens are caught as well, but Boots appears and helps them escape. With Dora’s parents still prisoners, Boots (voiced by Danny Trejo) helps Dora to find her confidence and tells the teens that they need to find the way inside Parapata to acquire the treasure so they can use it to bargain for Elena and Cole’s release.

Inside the hidden city, Dora and the others solve its temple’s puzzles and dodge its traps, bringing them to the central shrine. Alejandro secretly follows them and attempts to steal its central idol himself, but instead falls into a trap. The soldiers guarding Parapata defeat the mercenaries and confront the teens. Dora speaks to their queen (Q’orianka Kilcher) in Quechua, assuring that the kids only came for her parents and to learn. The Inca are grateful for saving their treasures and permit them all to have a single glimpse of their greatest treasure.

After the group leaves, Diego and Sammy become a couple. Dora’s parents and the teens arrive at her jungle home, where the other teens’ parents are waiting and are overjoyed to see them. Her parents discuss going on another expedition as a whole family, but Dora decides to return to school in Los Angeles.

During the credits, Dora and her friends celebrate at the school dance while singing the extended version of “We Did It.” Alejandro remains a prisoner in Parapata. Cole and Elena prevent Swiper from making off with one of their items.

The Martian

Year2015

Trailer

[Synopsis]

In 2035, the crew of the Ares III mission to Mars is exploring Acidalia Planitia on Martian solar day (sol) 18 of their 31-sol expedition. A severe dust storm threatens to topple their Mars Ascent Vehicle (MAV). The mission is scrubbed and as the crew evacuates, astronaut Mark Watney is struck by debris and lost in the storm. The telemetry from his suit’s biomonitor is damaged and Watney is presumed dead. With the MAV on the verge of toppling, the surviving crew take off for their orbiting vessel, the Hermes.

Watney awakens after the storm, injured and with a low-oxygen warning. He returns to the crew’s surface habitat (“Hab”) and treats his wound. As Watney recovers, he begins a video diary. Lacking communication with Earth, his only chance of rescue is via the next Mars mission, four years later: the Ares IV will be landing 3,200 kilometres (2,000 mi) away at the Schiaparelli crater. Watney’s immediate concern is food; being the mission’s botanist, he improvises a garden inside the Hab utilizing Martian soil fertilized with the crew’s bio-waste and manufactures water from leftover rocket fuel. He then plants the crew’s unused Thanksgiving dinner potatoes to supplement his food supply. He also begins modifying the rover for the long-distance trek to the Ares IV landing site.

On Earth, NASA satellite planner Mindy Park, reviewing aerial Hab images, notices moved equipment and realizes Mark is alive. NASA director, Teddy Sanders, publicly releases the news, though the Ares III crew (still en route to Earth) are not told so they remained focused on their mission. Sanders overrules Hermes flight director Mitch Henderson, who believes the crew should know.

Watney takes the rover to retrieve the nearby Pathfinder probe, which fell silent in 1997. Using Pathfinder’s camera and motor, he establishes rudimentary two-way communication with Earth, first using hand-written signs, and then sending and receiving ASCII in hexadecimal. NASA transmits a software patch to link the rover with Pathfinder and communicate via text. Watney is angry that the Hermes crew is unaware that he is alive; Sanders finally allows Henderson to inform them.

Mars mission director, Vincent Kapoor, and Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) director Bruce Ng prepare an Iris space probe to deliver enough food for Watney to survive until Ares IV’s arrival. Meanwhile, the Hab’s airlock malfunctions, causing an implosion and damaging the structure. Watney repairs and pressurizes the Hab, but the Martian atmosphere has destroyed the current potato crop and sterilized the soil. Believing it a low risk, Sanders orders the routine pre-flight safety inspections be bypassed to expedite the probe’s launch. The rocket explodes 40 seconds after liftoff. Watney now believes his death on Mars is inevitable.

The China National Space Administration has been developing a powerful classified booster rocket, the Taiyang Shen. Feeling camaraderie with NASA’s scientists, they violate their government’s secrecy and offer to repeat the Iris mission. As Watney’s situation grows more risky as time passes, JPL astrodynamicist Rich Purnell devises an alternative plan: have the Taiyang Shen rendezvous with and resupply the Hermes, which will then use Earth’s gravity to “slingshot” back to Mars two years earlier than Ares IV. Sanders rejects the idea, considering it too risky for the Hermes crew; Henderson surreptitiously sends Purnell’s plan to the crew who unanimously vote to implement it. They disable NASA’s remote controls and make the course change. Powerless to stop them, NASA concedes the issue.

Watney begins the 90-sol journey to Schiaparelli, where the MAV for Ares IV has been pre-positioned. The MAV needs to be lightened to intercept with Hermes on its new course. Watney removes many components, and replaces the nose cone with canvas. After takeoff, the MAV fails to reach the required speed. Commander Lewis maneuvers the Hermes to decelerate, consuming much fuel. She also orders an directional explosive decompression of the internal atmosphere to better align the ship. In a Manned Maneuvering Unit, Lewis is unable to reach Watney when the tether falls short. Watney pierces his pressure suit, using the escaping air to successfully propel himself to Lewis. He and the crew are reunited after Mark’s 560 sols alone on Mars.

After returning to Earth, Watney becomes a survival instructor for astronaut candidates. Five years later, as the Ares V is about to launch, those involved in Watney’s rescue are seen in their current lives.

Ant-Man And The Wasp

Year2018

Trailer

[Review]

Odder than the original but a very enjoyable sequel maintaining a good level of humour.

[Storyline]

Two years after Scott Lang was placed under house arrest due to his involvement with the Avengers, in violation of the Sokovia Accords, Hank Pym and his daughter Hope van Dyne briefly manage to open a tunnel to the quantum realm. They believe Pym’s wife Janet van Dyne might be trapped there after shrinking to sub-atomic levels in 1987. When he had previously visited the quantum realm, Lang had unknowingly become quantumly entangled with Janet, and now he receives an apparent message from her.
With only days left of house arrest, Lang contacts Pym about Janet, despite the strained relationship they have because of Lang’s actions with the Avengers. Hope and Pym kidnap Lang, leaving a large ant with Lang’s ankle-monitor on as a decoy so as not to arouse the suspicions of FBI agent Jimmy Woo. Believing the message from Janet is confirmation that she is alive, the trio work to build a stable quantum tunnel so they can take a vehicle to the quantum realm and retrieve her. They arrange to buy a part needed for the tunnel from black-market dealer Sonny Burch, but Burch realizes the potential profit to be made from Pym’s research and double-crosses them. Donning the Wasp outfit, Hope fights off Burch and his men until she is attacked by a quantumly unstable masked woman. Lang tries to help fight off this “ghost”, but the woman escapes with Pym’s lab, which has been shrunk down to the size of a suitcase.

Pym reluctantly takes Hope and Lang to visit his estranged former partner Bill Foster, who helps them locate the lab. The ghost captures the trio and reveals herself to be Ava Starr. Her father, Elihas, another of Pym’s former partners, died along with his wife during the experiment that caused Ava’s unstable state. Foster reveals that Ava is dying and in constant pain as a result of her condition, and they plan to cure her using Janet’s quantum energy. Believing that this will kill Janet, Pym refuses to help them and escapes with Hope, Lang, and the lab.

Opening a stable version of the tunnel, Pym, Hope, and Lang are able to contact Janet, who gives them a precise location to find her but warns that they only have two hours before the unstable nature of the realm separates them for a century. Using a truth serum, Burch learns the trio’s location from Lang’s business partners Luis, Dave, and Kurt, and informs a contact at the FBI. Luis warns Lang, who rushes home before Woo can see that he is violating his house arrest. Pym and Hope are arrested by the FBI, allowing Ava to take the lab.

Lang is soon able to help Pym and Hope escape custody, and they find the lab. Lang and Hope distract Ava while Pym enters the quantum realm to retrieve Janet, whom he finds alive. Meanwhile, Lang and Hope are confronted by Burch and his men, and following a lengthy chase, Ava regains control of the lab, allowing her to begin taking Janet’s energy by force. Luis, Dave, and Kurt incapacitate Burch and his men so that Lang and Hope can stop Ava. Pym and Janet return safely from the quantum realm, and Janet voluntarily gives some of her energy to Ava to temporarily stabilize her.

Lang returns home once again, in time for a now-suspicious Woo to release him at the end of his house arrest. Ava and Foster go into hiding. In a mid-credits scene, Pym, Lang, Hope, and Janet plan to harvest quantum energy to help Ava remain stable. While Lang is in the quantum realm doing this, the other three turn to dust.

Year2015

Trailer

[Review]

This was a far better addition to the Marvel Universe than I expected.

[Storyline]

In 1989, scientist Hank Pym resigns from S.H.I.E.L.D. after discovering their attempt to replicate his Ant-Man shrinking technology. Believing the technology would be dangerous if replicated, Pym vows to hide it for as long as he lives.

In the present day, Pym’s estranged daughter, Hope van Dyne, and former protégé, Darren Cross, have forced him out of his company, Pym Technologies. Cross is close to perfecting a shrinking suit of his own, the Yellowjacket, which horrifies Pym.

Upon his release from prison, well-meaning thief Scott Lang moves in with his old cellmate, Luis. Lang visits his daughter Cassie unannounced and is chastised by his former wife Maggie and her police-detective fiancé, Paxton, for not providing child support. Unable to hold down a job because of his criminal record, Lang agrees to join Luis’ crew and commit a burglary. Lang breaks into a house and cracks its safe, but only finds what he believes to be an old motorcycle suit, which he takes home. After trying the suit on, Lang accidentally shrinks himself to the size of an insect. Terrified by the experience, he returns the suit to the house, but is arrested on the way out. Pym, the homeowner, visits Lang in jail and smuggles the suit into his cell to help him break out.

Pym, who manipulated Lang through an unknowing Luis into stealing the suit as a test, wants Lang to become the new Ant-Man to steal the Yellowjacket from Cross. Having been spying on Cross after discovering his intentions, Van Dyne and Pym train Lang to fight and to control ants. While Van Dyne harbors resentment towards Pym about her mother Janet’s death, he reveals that Janet, known as the Wasp, disappeared into a subatomic quantum realm while disabling a Soviet nuclear missile. Pym warns Lang that he could suffer a similar fate if he overrides his suit’s regulator. They send him to steal a device that will aid their heist from the Avengers’ headquarters, where he briefly fights Sam Wilson.

Cross perfects the Yellowjacket and hosts an unveiling ceremony at Pym Technologies’ headquarters. Lang, along with his crew and a swarm of flying ants, infiltrates the building during the event, sabotages the company’s servers, and plants explosives. When he attempts to steal the Yellowjacket, he, along with Pym and Van Dyne, are captured by Cross, who intends to sell both the Yellowjacket and Ant-Man suits to Hydra. Lang breaks free and he and Van Dyne dispatch most of the Hydra agents, though one flees with a vial of Cross’ particles and Pym is shot. Lang pursues Cross, while the explosives detonate, imploding the building as Pym and Van Dyne escape.

Cross dons the Yellowjacket and attacks Lang before Lang is arrested by Paxton. Cross takes Cassie hostage to lure Lang into another fight. Lang overrides the regulator and shrinks to subatomic size to penetrate Cross’ suit and sabotage it to shrink uncontrollably, presumably killing Cross. Lang disappears into the quantum realm but manages to reverse the effects and returns to the macroscopic world. Out of gratitude for Lang’s heroism, Paxton covers for Lang to keep him out of prison. Seeing that Lang survived and returned from the quantum realm, Pym wonders if his wife is alive as well. Later, Lang meets up with Luis, who tells him that Wilson is looking for him.

In a mid-credits scene, Pym shows Van Dyne a new Wasp prototype suit and offers it to her. In a post-credits scene, Wilson and Steve Rogers have Bucky Barnes in their custody. Unable to contact Tony Stark because of “the accords”, Wilson mentions that he knows someone who can help.
