Michael Roger Channon is an English former footballer who played as a striker, most notably for Southampton and went on to represent the English national team in the 1970s. He later became a successful racehorse trainer.

1963 – Armando Iannucci

Armando Giovanni Iannucci, OBE is a Scottish satirist, writer, television director, and radio producer.

Born in Glasgow, Iannucci studied at the University of Oxford, leaving graduate work on a PhD about John Milton to pursue a career in comedy. Starting on BBC Scotland and BBC Radio 4, his early work with Chris Morris on the radio series On the Hour was transferred to television as The Day Today. A character from this series, Alan Partridge, went on to feature in a number of Iannucci’s television and radio programmes, including Knowing Me Knowing You with Alan Partridge and I’m Alan Partridge. Iannucci also fronted the satirical Armistice review shows and in 2001 created his most personal work, The Armando Iannucci Shows, for Channel 4.

In film, she has starred as Jane Lockhart in Not Another Happy Ending (2013), Kaylie Russell in the horror film Oculus (2013), and Nebula in the Marvel film Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) and its sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017). She took part in the upcoming films Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and its untitled sequel (2019). In 2017, she wrote and directed her first feature film, The Party’s Just Beginning.

2010 – Leslie Nielsen

Born: 11 February 1926

Leslie William Nielsen was a Canadian actor, comedian, and producer. He appeared in more than 100 films and 150 television programs, portraying more than 220 characters.

Nielsen was born in Regina, Saskatchewan. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and later worked as a disc jockey before receiving a scholarship to study theatre at the Neighborhood Playhouse. Making his acting debut in 1950, appearing in 46 live television programs a year. Nielsen made his film debut in 1956, with supporting roles in several drama, western, and romance films produced between the 1950s and the 1970s.

Although his performances in the films Forbidden Planet and The Poseidon Adventure gave him standing as a serious actor, Nielsen later gained enduring recognition for his deadpan comedy roles during the 1980s, after being cast against type for the Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker comedy film Airplane!. In his comedy roles, Nielsen specialized in portraying characters oblivious to and complicit in their absurd surroundings. His appearance in Airplane! marked Nielsen’s turning point, making him “the [Laurence] Olivier of spoofs” according to film critic Roger Ebert, and leading to further success in the genre with The Naked Gun film series, based on the earlier short-lived television series Police Squad! in which Nielsen also starred. Nielsen received a variety of awards and was inducted into the Canada and Hollywood Walks of Fame.

Neil Richard Flynn is an American actor, voice actor, and comedian, known for his role as Janitor on the NBC/ABC medical comedy-drama Scrubs. He currently portrays Mike Heck on the ABC sitcom The Middle. In many of his acting roles, he has portrayed a police officer.

Johannes Bruno “Johnny” Ertl is a former Austrian footballer who primarily played as a defensive midfielder, although he could also play at the right or centre of defence.

During his career, Ertl notably represented Sturm Graz, Crystal Palace, Sheffield United and Portsmouth; after retiring from playing in 2015, he became the spokesman of the Portsmouth F.C. supporters’ trust, also taking on a role as the assistant coach of the Portsmouth under-16s.

1923 – Nicholas Parsons

Christopher Nicholas Parsons, CBE is an English radio and television presenter and actor. His long career in television, radio and theatre has made him a household name and he has been described as “the ultimate quiz show host” because of his “geniality, clarity of diction and the speed with which he rattled through questions”.

Best known today for his long-standing position as host of the comedy radio game show Just a Minute, Parsons is also famous as the long-term host of Sale of the Century, a show whose audience peaked at over 21 million viewers (a record for an ITV game show).

1953 – Midge Ure

James “Midge” Ure, OBE is a Scottish musician, singer-songwriter and producer. His stage name, Midge, is a phonetic reversal of Jim, the diminutive form of his given name.

Ure enjoyed particular success in the 1970s and ’80s in bands including Slik, Thin Lizzy, Rich Kids and Visage, and most notably as frontman of Ultravox. In 1984 Ure co-wrote and produced the charity single “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”, which has sold 3.7 million copies in the UK. The song is the second highest selling single in UK chart history. Ure co-organised Band Aid, Live Aid and Live 8 with Bob Geldof. Ure acts as trustee for the charity, and serves as ambassador for Save the Children.

Ure is known for being the producer and writer of several synthpop/new wave hit singles of the 1980s, including “Fade To Grey” (1980) by Visage and the Ultravox signature songs “Vienna” (1980) and “Dancing with Tears in My Eyes” (1984), for which he was also on lead vocals. In 1985 Ure’s solo debut album The Gift, which reached number two in the UK Albums Chart, included the UK number one single “If I Was”. Ure has had four other UK top-30 solo hit singles: “No Regrets”, “That Certain Smile”, “Call of the Wild” and “Cold, Cold Heart”.

Vincent Mark Hilaire is a retired professional footballer who played in the Football League for Crystal Palace, Luton Town, Portsmouth, Leeds United, Stoke City and Exeter City. He was one of the first established black players in English football.

1992 – Gabrielle Aplin

 

Gabrielle Ann Aplin is an English singer-songwriter. Aplin came to public attention after she gained a large online following by posting acoustic covers of songs on her YouTube channel.

In February 2012, Aplin signed a recording deal with Parlophone and began recording her début album. She gained mainstream attention the following November, when she was selected to record the soundtrack for a John Lewis television commercial with a cover of Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s “The Power of Love”, which charted at number 1 on the UK Singles Chart in December 2012. Her début album English Rain, was released in May 2013 to positive reviews. It debuted and peaked at number two on the UK album chart and led to several more singles: “Please Don’t Say You Love Me”, “Panic Cord”, “Home” and “Salvation”. English Rain has since been certified Gold in the UK, selling over 100,000 copies.

Aplin’s second album, Light Up the Dark, featuring the singles “Light Up the Dark” and “Sweet Nothing”, was released on 18 September 2015.

Sir Ian Holm CBE is an English actor known for his stage work and many film roles. He received the 1967 Tony Award for Best Featured Actor for his performance as Lenny in The Homecoming and the 1998 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor for his performance in the title role of King Lear. He won the 1981 BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his role as athletics trainer Sam Mussabini in Chariots of Fire, for which he was also nominated for an Academy Award.
His other well-known film roles include Ash in Alien, Sir William Gull in From Hell, Father Vito Cornelius in The Fifth Element, and the hobbit Bilbo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit film series.

He is also remembered for playing the besotted Freddie Eynsford-Hill in the Warner Bros. 1964 production of My Fair Lady.
