Jeff Wayne's Musical Version Of
The War Of The Worlds

Plot Summary

Featuring a stellar cast, Jeff Wayne’s global music phenomenon is re imagined and brought to spectacular West End life for its much-anticipated world stage premiere.

Making their West End debuts are iconic actor, musician, and writer Jimmy Nail, British singer-songwriter Daniel Bedingfield, and former Sugababes popstar Heidi Range. Joining them are West End stars Michael Praed (The Sound of Music, Palladium) and Madalena Alberto (Evita, Dominion). Completing one of the starriest casts the West End has seen, the legendary David Essex returns to The War Of The Worlds for the first time since he recorded the original double album.

Also featuring Liam Neeson in sight and sound, the iconic Martian Fighting Machine, special effects, and a live orchestra conducted on stage by Jeff Wayne, this phenomenal new production playing for a strictly limited run until 30th April is not to be missed.

Verdict

A very difficult one to review. After seeing the “Arena” tours this was a disappointment. A reduced band didn’t reflect a loss of music quality but the additional dancers were a distraction. Once into the feeling that this was a West End Show you can begin to appreciate it from the view of its potential target audience. Individual performances were generally high (exceptional in Daniel Bedingfield’s case), the only lack lustre performance was from David Essex, he was not up to singing Thunderchild.

Plot Summary

A story of creation, love, hate, adventure, and, most of all, sex; the story begins in Denton, Ohio as Brad Majors and Janet Weiss, after getting engaged (Dammit Janet), travel to see “the man who began it,” but wind up at the castle of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a transvestite alien from the planet of Transsexual in the galaxy of Transylvania (Sweet Transvestite). And they meet Riff Raff, Magenta, and Columbia which leads to “doing the Time Warp again!”

They discover they have been there on a “special night.” Frank’s creation is to be born! As Rocky has been revealed (Sword of Damocles / I Can Make You A Man), rebel Eddie, Frank’s last-recent creation, ponders in on his motorcycle (Hot Patootie-Bless My Soul) whom Frank kills.

In comes Dr. Everett Von Scott, he’s come for Eddie (Eddie’s Teddy) which results in the discovery of Eddie’s deceased body. Frank chases Janet and Brad and Dr. Scott chase Frank (Planet Schmanet Janet), which results in everybody (but Frank) getting frozen. Enter the floor show (Rose Tint My World / Don’t Dream It / Wild & Untamed Thing) which then turns into the horrifying death of both Frank and Columbia die and the castle’s blasting off! Brad, Janet, and Dr. Scott survive and leave with torn clothes and battered bodies.

Verdict

My second time of seeing Rocky Horror live, some positives and some negatives. A far better Rocky and Janet with an equally good Brad. Alas Magenta and Columbia not as good as previous and Frank-N-Furter, whilst an amazing singer, didn’t have the same presence as his predecessor.
