MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

Coventry City 0    1 Portsmouth

Ronan Curtis scored on the stroke of half-time to fire Pompey to victory in an otherwise uneventful match at Coventry.

Not that the near-2,000 travelling fans will care much about the quality of the contest, as they saw their side extend their unbeaten start to the season.

In a game of extremely few genuine opportunities, Curtis’ curling finish stood out and ensured the Blues remained top of the League One table.

Kenny Jackett unsurprisingly stuck with the same side that beat Rochdale to reach the League One summit on Saturday.

There were a few familiar faces in the opposition line-up, with Michael Doyle, Tom Davies and Dom Hyam all starting, and Liam O’Brien on the bench.

The first half was a largely forgettable affair, with long periods of lifeless play punctuated by a few key moments.

Pompey were first to threaten and Ben Close should at least have sent the ball on target when he met Nathan Thompson’s cross with a side-foot shot.

A dangerous corner from Gareth Evans then had to be headed clear by Jonson Clarke-Harris, as the visitors looked to make a fast start.

But there were not many other clear-cut opportunities to excite the crowd inside the cavernous Ricoh Arena.

A booking apiece for Dujon Sterling and Tom Naylor rose them from their slumber, although the latter was adamant he had won the ball cleanly from Luke Thomas.

But Pompey received a let-off on the half-hour mark when Matt Clarke inexplicably stopped in his tracks, allowing Clarke-Harris to surge towards goal.

Craig MacGillivray thankfully came to the rescue, tearing from his line to make a vital save and then leaping on the loose ball.

It looked like the sides would crawl uneventfully towards the interval, with a few Blues crosses that were headed clear about as exciting as it got.

But the large travelling army from the south coast had reason for their non-stop chanting in stoppage-time.

Evans stole possession from former team-mate Doyle and Close’s pass was nodded down by Brett Pitman.

It looked like CURTIS had taken too long to get his shot away, but he was merely making space to curl home a fine finish.

Half Time

Coventry City 0

Portsmouth 1

Pompey made an energetic start to the second half, although Evans was forced to take one for the team and pick up a booking when Thomas broke quickly following a corner.

But it was still proving to be a fairly scrappy encounter, with both sides struggling to keep hold of the ball.

There were plenty of bs being sent into the boxes, but it always seemed to be an opposition player getting on the end of them.

Coventry did enjoy more possession as the half progressed, although it was proving a comfortable evening for MacGillivray.

Tony Andreu attempted an ambitious volley on the edge of the Blues box and swiped at thin air to sum up the attacking quality on display.

Jackett made a chance on 70 minutes, bringing on Ben Thompson to replace Close and shore up his midfield.

And Pitman then made way for Oli Hawkins as time continued to tick away without anyone looking likely to add to the scoring.

The first of those newcomers did have a rare chance towards the end, with a fierce finish that Lee Burge just about dealt with.

Jamal Lowe also curled a shot narrowly past the post, as Pompey appeared to be comfortably heading for victory.

But they survived a scare at the death, with MacGillivray failing to hold Doyle’s free-kick and a scramble ensuing before Naylor hooked from the line.

Love my old Casio CZ-101 but it does suffer from lack of memory with limited onboard storage which needs some rather heavy batteries to maintain and the cartridges never seemed to hold the memory for long either.

I came across an article on Vintage Synth Explorer where someone was discussing a modification to add an internal battery backup when someone posted this rather neat little gadget. Not exactly cheap being in excess of £125  but it does a great job.

Ordered form the US and very much a home project evidenced by the hobbyist plastic case and sticky labels but what it offers is great. Long term storage and come complete with over 2000+ sounds and even adds an arpeggiator!

Well worth the money

A Bridge Too Far

1977

Plot

The true story of Operation Market Garden, the Allies attempt, in September 1944, to hasten the end of WW2 by driving through Belgium and Holland into Germany. The idea was for US airborne divisions to take the towns of Eindhoven and Nijmegen and a British airborne division, reinforced by a Polish airborne brigade, to take the town of Arnhem. They would be reinforced, in due course and in turn, by the British XXX Corps, land-based and driving up from the British lines in the south. The key to the operation was the bridges, as if the Germans held or blew them, the paratroopers could not be relieved. Faulty intelligence, Allied high command hubris and stubborn German resistance would ensure that Arnhem was a bridge too far.

Summary

An all star cast in a faithful telling of an Allied military failure which was unusual in it's day as films were normally of glorious victories. One of the best war movies of it's day.

Match Report

League One

Rochdale 1    3 Portsmouth

Pompey fought from behind to beat Rochdale and return to the top of the League One table.

The hosts took an early lead in some style when Aaron Wilbraham struck a sensational shot from long-range.

But the Blues were impressive in the opening 45 minutes and Jamal Lowe deservedly ensured the scores would be level at the break.

It was not quite so strong after the interval, but Brett Pitman showed typical striking instincts to turn the game around on his 50th appearance for the club.

And Matt Clarke added a fine third goal to wrap the points up for the visitors in the closing stages of an enjoyable Spotland contest.

Kenny Jackett made two changes from the side that drew with Wycombe on home soil the previous week.

Pitman returned to skipper the team, while there was also a start for Jack Whatmough at the back, with Oli Hawkins and Christian Burgess dropping to the bench.

Pompey got off to the worst possible start by falling behind in the fourth minute – not that they could have done much to prevent it.

It was a phenomenal effort from Wilbraham, who hit a stunning strike on the half-volley from almost 30 yards that left Craig MacGillivray with no chance.

But it was the Blues largely on top for the remainder of the half and an ambitious over-head effort from Gareth Evans flew past the post.

Nathan Thompson almost grabbed an unlikely leveller after collecting a pass from Pitman and firing a rocket against the crossbar.

Ollie Rathbone then had another long-range attempt for the hosts, although this one thankfully flew wide.

But Pompey were level on 25 minutes, thanks to a well-worked goal involving all three of the forward line.

Pitman collected the ball from Ronan Curtis, swivelled and sent in a low centre for LOWE to slide into the net.

He might have had another after being picked out by Pitman, but a poor first touch allowed Joe Rafferty to clear the danger.

The trio linked up well again when the skipper flicked on Lowe’s cross and Curtis met it with a deft touch, but Josh Lillis got down to his right to save.

Pompey were looking to attack at every opportunity and there were some nervy moments for the Dale back-line.

But Lillis was not being over-worked and made relatively comfortable stops to deny both Curtis and Lowe.

The keeper then came tearing from his line in stoppage-time to stop Lowe reaching Pitman’s threaded pass after Curtis had nipped in to steal possession from a Rochdale throw.

Half Time

Rochdale 1

Portsmouth 1

It was the hosts that were first to threaten after the restart, but when MacGillivray parried Andy Cannon’s effort, Rathbone skied the loose ball over.

There was certainly some of the excitement from the first half missing, however, with both sides guilty of some misplaced passes.

Ian Henderson curled a shot wide for Rochdale, while a well-placed Ben Close headed clear Cannon’s dangerous cross.

Then – after Lowe had been booked for a foul – Rathbone came close to sneaking the free-kick inside MacGillivray’s near post.

There was not too much happening at the other end of the pitch, although an Evans set-piece was glanced wide by Tom Naylor.

But the Blues took the lead on 71 minutes when a low ball from Lee Brown was deftly turned home by PITMAN at the near post.

A substitution soon followed, with Ben Thompson coming on for Evans to shore up the Blues midfield.

But it was not the end of Pompey’s attacking intent and they were able to extend their advantage on 81 minutes.

Rochdale failed to properly deal with a corner and CLARKE showed he is not just a class act at the back.

The defender brought the ball under control, beat his man and angled home a fierce strike that arrowed into the net.

David Wheeler and Hawkins were both introduced from the bench late on, as the visitors comfortably saw out the final few moments.
