Mehmeti

Pompey were made to pay for a slow start as they were beaten 1-0 by Bristol City at a packed Fratton Park.

Anis Mehmeti headed home for the visitors during a first half when the hosts only came alive towards the end.

It was much better from the Blues after the break and they created quite a few chances, but could not find an equaliser against the resolute Robins.

John Mousinho made three changes from the side that were beaten on the road at Sheffield United earlier in the week.

One of those switches was enforced, with Terry Devlin’s red card against the Blades seeing him replaced in defence by Jordan Williams.

There was also a first start since mid-August for the fit-again Callum Lang and a return for skipper Marlon Pack, as Florian Bianchini and Márk Kosznovszky dropped to the bench.

But the hosts got off to a sluggish start and their opponents quickly looked to take advantage, having a chance to break the deadlock in the opening seconds.

Scott Twine was tumbling to the turf as he got his shot away, though, and could only hook the ball past the post.

Pompey just could not find any attacking rhythm and there was plenty of pressure coming in the opposite direction.

Josh Murphy did swing in a dangerous cross that Radek Vítek could only parry, but the visitors were able to clear the danger.

And they took a deserved lead on 17 minutes, as Neto Borges’ cross was converted by a firm close-range header from Mehmeti.

Murphy drilled wide at the other end, but it was City who looked more likely to add to the scoring as the Fratton faithful showed their frustration.

The stole possession and Mehmeti fired past the post before Nicolas Schmid got down to deal with an Emil Riis drive.

There was a switch in momentum as the first half drew towards a close, however, and the Blues began to control possession and territory – without making many inroads in the final third.

Colby Bishop did get his head to a Williams centre after the defender had found space to advance, but the effort was deflected wide.

But the hosts had a great chance to level just before the break when Josh Knight was left alone to meet Adrian Segečić’s free-kick, only to nod over the bar.

Half Time: Pompey 0 Bristol City 1

Another opportunity to equalise came straight after the restart, with Bishop trying to bundle home Andre Dozzell’s low centre and Zak Vyner doing just enough to prevent the ball crossing the line.

It had turned into an open contest, with the action quickly switching from one end of the pitch to the other.

Zak Swanson made a fine challenge to halt one Robins charge, while Schmid kept out Mehmeti’s angled strike.

The hosts, meanwhile, were unhappy at a number of decisions from referee Sam Allison and Murphy’s protests earned him a yellow card.

Mousinho made his first switch on 52 minutes, as Kosznovszky came on for Dozzell in the midfield engine room.

Murphy was once again proving to be the Blues’ best attacking outlet and another fine cross was headed over by Lang at the back post.

Pressure continued to be applied and when Vítek could only punch clear Segečić’s corner, Murphy’s shot on the half-volley flew narrowly wide.

The hosts still had to remain alert at the other end, though, and Regan Poole was across to block Mehemti’s shot when Twine played a quick free-kick.

Lang was always unlikely to last the whole game and he was replaced in attack by Makenzie Kirk on 72 minutes.

And the new man soon had a chance to level the scores, with a low shot from Pack’s hurled throw that Vítek was able to keep out.

Mousinho’s final throw of the dice saw an attacking triple change on 81 minutes, with Minhyeok Yang, John Swift and Conor Chaplin on for Segečić, Williams and Swanson.

It saw Pack step back into a three-man defence, as the hosts looked to get the ball forward as much as possible.

They had a great chance when Chaplin threaded a neat pass through for Bishop, but Vítek came to City’s rescue with a smart save.

Chaplin then hit a shot that deflected towards Knight in the box, with the centre-back only able to nod wide.

Pompey were throwing everything at their visitors and Kirk thought he should have had a penalty after receiving a nudge, but time eventually ran out for the hosts.
