John Swift scored his first
goal for Pompey to earn a deserved draw against high-flying Leicester at
the King Power Stadium. They were put under intense pressure throughout the first half and Aaron Ramsey gave the hosts a lead at the break. But the Blues looked a different outfit following the restart and Swift’s strike came as absolutely no surprise. In fact, the visitors could feel slightly perturbed not to come away with all three points as more than 3,000 travelling fans witnessed them break with real menace. John Mousinho stuck with the same side that impressively ended Middlesbrough’s unbeaten start to the season before the international break. There was a minute’s applause before kick-off to pay tribute to former Pompey and Leicester chairman Milan Mandarić following his sad passing earlier this month, while both sides also wore black armbands. The game took a while to get going, with each side guilty of wasting some promising openings with a poor final ball. But it was the home side who settled quicker and a long-range effort from Jordan James was turned behind by a diving Josef Bursik. And the Foxes did break the deadlock on 26 minutes, when Abdul Fatawu’s centre was acrobatically converted by Ramsey. There was almost a quick response from the visitors, but Minhyeok Yang’s fine volley from the edge of the box crashed against the crossbar. Leicester were soon back on the attack and after Ramsey was afforded space to advance, his shot had to be turned over by Bursik. And the keeper made another smart stop on 41 minutes to claw behind an attempt from the lively Fatawu. Pompey, meanwhile, had some bright moments, but were unable to get things right in the final third to trouble Jakub Stolarczyk between the sticks. A long-range curler from Harry Winks was then bent narrowly past the post, as the Blues welcomed the interval whistle for an opportunity to regroup. Half Time: Leicester 1 Pompey 0 An Andre Dozzell corner caused the Foxes problems immediately after the restart, although the ball was eventually scrambled away. And another delivery from the midfielder was then met by Colby Bishop in the box, with his header bouncing down and wide of the post. It was a bright start to the half by the Blues and skipper Marlon Pack hit a shot over after neatly chesting the ball down. And they deservedly found themselves back on level terms on 59 minutes after a move that was started and ended by the same player. Pompey won back possession and SWIFT found Minhyeok, who beat Wout Faes before laying the ball off for the midfielder to fire home inside Stolarczyk’s near post. Mousinho made his first switch shortly afterwards, as Conor Chaplin was replaced out wide by Márk Kosznovszky. And the Hungarian soon hit a ferocious effort that rose not too far over the bar after Swift’s free-kick had been cleared into his path. Mousinho made his second switch on 74 minutes, with Minhyeok serenaded by the travelling fans as he made way for Florian Bianchini. Leicester had been second best since the interval, but came close to restoring their lead when substitute Jordan Ayew burst inside from the left and flashed a shot narrowly wide. It was Pompey’s turn to then go close to gaining an advantage after Bishop had held the ball up well and found Kosznovszky on the right. He slipped a pass through for Jordan Williams, who cut-back was met by Bianchini, only for the loanee to see his close-range effort brilliantly saved by the leg of Stolarczyk. Mousinho’s final changes saw Terry Devlin and Adrian Segečić come on for Williams and Swift on 81 minutes. The display of seven additional minutes drew some nervous groans, as the Foxes began to find some rhythm again. And the Blues received a late let-off when Hamza Choudhury’s cross was rolled past the post by Luke Thomas right at the very end. |
